I took advantage of the nice New England day today to wash the MR2 so I can start detailing it while it's in storage.

I also wanted to clean up the engine bay. I can't really do that indoors, so I wanted to get that done today too. I sprayed everything down with Simple Green, used a small detailing brush, and my cheapo Harbor Freight engine cleaning gun. It's kind of cool, but it's not the greatest. It's basically a nozzle at the end of a long extension that hooks up to an air compressor. The gun siphons water from a bucket and forces an air and water mix through the nozzle. It's certainly not powerful enough to blast grime away, and the siphon hose is too short, but it works well to pinpoint areas that you want to rinse.

I also wiped a lot of areas down with just a wet cloth. I thought these vacuum hoses were deteriorating rubber and I was considering just replacing them. I wiped them off and sure enough they are perfectly fine.

I lost the sticker on the back, but this cleaned up better than I thought it would. Not bad for 28 years old.

I was able to get rid of most of the oily grime, enough so "Toyota" was legible once again. The silver paint was starting to flake over by the "Twin" of twin cam, so I took it easy with the brush.

I can remove the silver body panel on the left to really clean up in here, but I think it looks pretty good.

I love a clean engine cover! I've got to do some homework to figure out how to clean out the shields around the hood vents. Lots of dirt in there visible from the top.

the coolant resivoir looks nice and clean, I think I'll blacken the plastic shroud around it too. I have some body pieces that could use some blackening treatment to, so this might be my next step. After that, it's on to claying, polishing, sealing, and waxing the paint. Then I want to replace the shifter boot and maybe the sun visor if I can find one. The previous owner had some sort of photo frame clip on it that I tossed. After so many years, the clip left a divet in the visor, and that bugs me...

Haha yeah Oppo will definitely get first dibs when the day comes. I'm going to do my best to record everything I do to it on here too so it'll have a good record

If you really want to de-clutter the engine bay, get rid of the EGR and look up a "Jimi" throttle bracket to delete that big ugly tri-pod looking thing.

BTW, what are the specs? I've not been around as much lately and don't know if I've seen your MR2 before.

it's a 1986 NA model with a 5-speed with only 57,000 miles on it! It was apparently owned by an older man who bought it new and kept it as his weekend toy until he passed away. I'm going to keep it as original as possible and take it to shows and stuff. Here's some of my older posts:

HNNNNNNNNNNNG!

Ok, yeah. That is seriously trouser-crisis-inducing. If you EVER desire to sell it, let me know. The first-gen MR2 is one of my bucket-list cars.
